32. PERPETUAL MINGLE (Questioning, Discussion, Feedback)
Description: Based on the University of Iowa’s Center for Teaching Mingling Activity, Perpetual Mingle combines active engagement with student-to-student dialog.
Application: This protocol is useful in most subjects and can be used as a formative assessment.
Process: Prepare a list of questions based on a unit or topic of study, one question per student. Leave a space between questions and cut into strips (one question per strip). Hand out one question strip to each student and review the activity’s procedure: 1) At the signal, all students will stand and find a partner. 2) Within each pair, Student One will ask Student Two his question and after answering, Student Two will ask Student One his question. 3) After both questions have been asked and answered, the pair exchanges strips and each finds another partner to ask and answer questions. 4) The process is repeated until all or most of the students have mingled with one another. Monitor students for accuracy of information and make adjustments to clarify or extend learning.
